Your Guide to Spring Gardening

Good news! The gloomy winter season is almost behind us, which means it’s time to start focusing on the beautiful spring that’s so close you can almost feel it. As the evenings grow a little lighter, it’s an ideal time to start thinking of how you’d like to kick start your garden this year. To help you along, we’ve created a guide to spring gardening to help you get started!

Garden Prep

Of course, spring cleaning is always the first important step to take after enduring the long, messy winter months. So start by cleaning up your garden area and saying goodbye to any remnants of winter. Rake up the leaves and winter mulch, get rid of any old pots and plants, and get your garden bed clean and clear for planting.

Improve The Soil

Once your garden area is clear of debris or winter mulch, make sure to loosen the soil, pull up any weeds, and add compost or new soil to boost the nutrient content so your plants can flourish. Soil can become fairly nutrient-deficient and dried out over the winter, so make sure you don’t skip this step! You should be left with a good few inches of loose, mixed soil in your garden beds.

Trim & Prune

Though some of your plants are better off being pruned before the winter arrives, others are better to trim just before new growth begins in the early spring. Items like rose bushes and fruit trees, for example, benefit greatly when they get trimmed right before they produce new shoots. This lets them grow nice and healthy, and it can even help them stave off disease.

Get Planting

If you’re adding some new plants and vegetation to your garden, spring is a great time to take advantage of the cooler, damp soil. Just be sure to choose the right plants for your level of shade or sun, and remember to not plant them too deep in the soil. This is a common mistake made in gardening. The base of the roots and trunk should always be flush with the ground level instead of being buried under it.

Mulch, Water, Maintain

Once your plants are in the ground, give them all a good soaking. Watering should be done daily and slowly to let the plants and soil absorb water properly. And always do it in the morning or evening when the sun is less intense to avoid water evaporating. Adding a new layer of mulch to your garden can prevent the soil from drying out while also hindering weed growth. If needed, use some fertilizer once per month to give your garden that extra dose of nutrients.
